Russell on pole: "Need to look into and understand where that came from"
George Russell will start the 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix from pole position to give Mercedes a Saturday P1 for the first time this season. The British driver earns his first career pole position, the 105th driver to do so in Formula 1.
Shock pole position
By their own admission, Mercedes have been poor this season but still manage to be third in the constructors championship. The German team have been trying to find a way back to the front over the last 13 rounds. Russell wants to save the moment and identify how that happened after what was one of their worst Friday practice session.
"I'm over the moon, absolutely buzzing. Yesterday was probably the worst of the season, and everyone last night worked so hard. We didn't know what direction to go in. Turn 1 and 2 was mega. The lap time kept coming, it was an incredible feeling to see P1. We need to look into and understand where that came from today. There are a few ideas we have," Russell said in the post-session interviews.
But the young British driver remained grounded and aware that the job isn't finished yet. "But there are no points for qualifying. We had good race pace, but the Ferraris looked very fast on Friday. We'll be going for it," he added.
