Hungary qualifying full results | Russell big surprise with pole!
- GPblog.com
George Russell surprised the entire F1 world with his pole position at the Hungaroring in Budapest. Ferrari seemed to be the high favourite, but Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz had nothing to say to the Briton's surprisingly fast lap. Max Verstappen finished on P10 after problems.
While Mercedes had a very bad Friday in Hungary, Ferrari had an excellent one. Qualifying was finally on a dry track, but as it had cooled heavily, qualifying became particularly interesting. The track got hotter with each lap and timing seemed to be crucial. Mercedes chose to go out on track last in Q3 and it paid off.
While Verstappen seemed to be up against Ferrari in Q1 and Q2, things went completely wrong for the Dutchman in Q3. With engine problems in his outlap that he could not solve, he ended up with the tenth fastest time. One place ahead of his teammate Sergio Perez who was eliminated in Q2.
