The world title may be out of reach for the silver jacks, but Mercedes are not yet prepared to give up hope of victory in 2022. Whereas
Toto Wolff was very dejected at Spa, the team boss denies he has abandoned ambition for victory.
Wolff not letting go of hope for victory
In Hungary, Mercedes seemed to have closed the gap to the leaders, but in the first race after the summer break, that gap widened again. Qualifying in particular was a painful experience for the German team, with both
Lewis Hamilton and
George Russell having to concede about two seconds to fastest man
Max Verstappen.
On Sunday, the W13's pace was better than the day before, but Mercedes still fell short of threatening the front-runners. Wolff, however, is not prepared to give up hope of victories this year.
"We still have the ambition to win races this year," the Austrian is quoted by
Formel1.de.
"When I say that today, I look like an idiot," he admits after the
Belgian Grand Prix. However, Wolff believes there will be tracks that suit his team better, as was the case at the Hungaroring. At the same time, he argues that the focus has now largely shifted to 2023.
