Since the Japan Grand Prix, Max Verstappen has been part of a special club within Formula 1, namely the two-time world champions. Among others, Mika Hakkinen, Emerson Fittipaldi, but also Fernando Alonso belong to that group. The Spaniard praises Verstappen for his adaptability.
Winning two world titles in a row is not easy, but Verstappen also managed to do it in a season with major rule changes. While a driver depends heavily on the team and the development of the car, it is also up to the driver himself to get the most out of his car. Alonso stresses that the adaptability of top drivers is an definitive trait.
At the start of the 2022 season, Verstappen still had problems at times with the RB18 after the new regulations. While teammate Sergio Perez seemed comfortable, the Dutchman struggled with his car. However, after the Monaco Grand Prix, Verstappen found confidence in the RB18 again. Although the car was completely different in 2021, Verstappen also managed to get the most out of it this season. Drivers like Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton and Alonso himself also managed to win a title in a year with major rule changes.
Alonso admires Verstappen
Alonso sees how some drivers like Verstappen quickly get to the limit of the car. "You cannot teach that. I think it has to come from yourself. There are drivers that they need more time, they need to study more data, they need all the Friday to analyse and compare with a team-mate and slowly make little steps until they are 100% ready for qualifying", the Alpine driver says in conversation with The Race.
"And there are others that are 100% in FP1. Max is one of those and he has been always like that from go-karts to now. It should not be a surprise for anyone", the two-time world champion continues.
