The 2023 Chinese Grand Prix was scheduled on 16 April, but it is now known that the race will not take place due to Covid measures in the country. Formula 1 must therefore look for a replacement. The German Grand Prix at the Hockenheimring is mentioned by many fans as a contender, but the circuit is not interested in hosting a race in 2023.

It had been looming for a while that the Chinese GP could not go ahead in 2023. The Shanghai race was on the official calendar for next year, but because of the Covid measures that are still in force, it was uncertain from the start whether the Grand Prix could actually go ahead. Last week, F1 officially announced that the race had been cancelled. This leaves a big hole in the calendar, so F1 is busy trying to find a replacement.

There are several contenders, including Turkey and Malaysia, but also Germany. The country's last race was staged in 2020. With the great successes of German F1 drivers, it is extraordinary that the country no longer has a spot on the calendar. Yet it seems we will not see a German Grand Prix in 2023 either.

Hockenheim is not interested in hosting 2023 race

"We can say that there are currently no talks between F1 and us. Also, in view of our busy event calendar next year, it would be a big challenge to have F1 take place at our venue. We are not interested in organising a spontaneous event, but we are still interested in bringing F1 to the Hockenheimring with a medium-term perspective for the future", say the circuit's organisers to GPblog.

A race at the Nürburgring also seems unlikely, as the circuit already has another event scheduled over the weekend of the GP of China. So the 2023 German GP will probably have to be skipped as well.
