FIA’s Nikolas Tombazis admits the 2019 rule changes will be a “halfway house” between those coming for 2021. These could include changes to front wings, front brake ducts with wider, larger rear wings.
Most of the changes coming in are aimed at increasing the number of overtakes seen during an F1 race. Overtaking was a huge issue in Melbourne, but has since been partly boiled down.
Ross Brawn, the FIA and the sport’s management team are working closely to form the future rules.
“These regulations for 2019 where an extract of some of the lessons learned already at Formula 1,” Tombazis said.
“They had to be implementable for 2019, so they only covered specific areas of the car which is a bit simpler.
“The underlying lessons that we have learned with F1 about how the cars perform in the wake of other cars, for example, have been used but let’s say it’s only a halfway house.”
These rule changes for 2019 have experienced a stir from teams and drivers. This is because they’re likely to come with a hefty price tag.
