Mercedes team boss Wolff very happy: 'It was a risky move'
Qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix was not one Toto Wolff wants to be remembered for, but Sunday's race was. Mercedes was on the podium with two W14s and so the team boss is obviously very pleased.
"I am very happy for the hard work that has been done," Wolff interjected to GPblog among others. The 2023 car has undergone a number of changes and, judging by the Spanish GP, that seems to have been the right choice. "We took some decisions to go in another direction. We changed so many parts. It was a risky move and everyone pushed forward. We have a good race car."
Mercedes makes leaps and bounds
According to the 51-year-old Austrian, Mercedes needed the poor start to the season to face reality. In the winter tests and in the season opener in Bahrain, the W14 did not perform at all. "That shuck it up and we pushed forward. You need to design parts, produce them. The team back at base did a mega job. It has nothing to do with me. If I start to design the car, it's not a good situation. It was focusing on what we know well. The wake up at the start of the season did us good," he explained.
So Mercedes has had a good Sunday, but sitting back is not one of them, according to Wolff. "We just need to chip away. We are really good at grinding. Once there is a direction, we go for it. But we also have to be realistic, today the temps suited us. It was nice and fresh, not too cold not too hot."
