These are the F1 records the dominant Verstappen can break in 2023!
- Niels Lagemaat
The 2023 Formula 1 season has been great so far for Max Verstappen. The Dutchman leads the championship by almost 100 points and failed to win just two of the 10 races in 2023. With the speed of the RB19, Verstappen's dominance looks set to continue for some time, which leads to the question: which F1 records can the Dutchman break in 2023?
Verstappen chasing (own) victory records
Verstappen is on eight wins after ten races in 2023 and the Dutchman seems hard to stop in his RB19. There are 12 Grand Prix weekends left on the schedule and so the two-time world champion could theoretically reach 20 wins. While this is obviously very difficult, the Dutchman is already well placed to improve the record for most wins in a single season. Verstappen set that record himself last year, with 15 wins. So the Red Bull Racing driver still needs to win eight of the 12 races this season to break his own record.
It may not be entirely fair to look at the absolute number of wins in one season, as there used to be far fewer races in a season. However, Verstappen is also well placed to challenge the record for the highest victory percentage in a single season. That record currently still stands in the name of Alberto Ascari. The Italian won six out of eight races in 1952, giving him a 75 per cent victory rate. Verstappen is on a winning percentage of 80 per cent after ten races and is therefore on course to break this record too.
In 2013, Sebastian Vettel set an impressive winning streak. The German then won all races after the summer break, which meant the four-time world champion won a total of nine races in a row. It seemed no one would ever come close to this record again, but after Verstappen's victory at Silverstone, the tally stands at six consecutive wins. So the Dutchman is getting close and can match Vettel's record at his home Zandvoort and then break it in Italy. First, Verstappen needs to win the Grands Prix in Hungary and Belgium.
Qualifying records trickier for Verstappen
Qualifying records seem to be harder for Verstappen to break, as his competition is often closer over one lap than over an entire race distance. However, the Dutchman did take his fifth pole in a row at Silverstone and the record for this stands at eight, held by Ayrton Senna. So the same applies to this as to the consecutive say record: Verstappen can match the record at Zandvoort and break it at Monza.
The record for most poles in a season is held by Vettel; the German took fifteen poles in 2011. In the ten races in 2013, Verstappen captured pole position seven times, so the two-time world champion has yet to capture pole in nine of the 12 qualifying sessions this season to break Vettel's record. The highest percentage is held by Nigel Mansell, in 1992 with 87.5 per cent. To break this, Verstappen needs to conquer pole position in all upcoming races and that seems very high.
Other unique records for Verstappen
Verstappen can also top a record Michael Schumacher set in 2002 this year. The seven-time world champion led the championship 37 races in a row during his dominant time at Ferrari and Verstappen can improve on that this year. Should Verstappen grab his third world title this year without relinquishing the championship lead, the Dutchman will lead the championship 39 races in a row. In doing so, the Dutchman would then lead the world championship from last year's Spanish Grand Prix to this year's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Verstappen could also further improve another Formula 1 record that is in his own name. In 2022, the Limburger scored over 76 per cent of the maximum number of points attainable, which then bettered Lewis Hamilton' s record. So far in 2023, Verstappen has scored 255 points, and 276 points were theoretically achievable. This means the Dutchman's current percentage stands at over 92 per cent (!), putting Verstappen well on course to break his own record.
