Lawson returns to Super Formula's final race: 'That's the intention'
Daniel Ricciardo is back with his team AlphaTauri this weekend, but the Australian will not be in action in Singapore yet. When he would be sufficiently recovered from the fracture of his metacarpal is still unknown. In the meantime, Liam Lawson is still his replacement. The New Zealander is also still active in Japanese Super Formula, where he is a contender for the title.
Lawson still plans to drive the last race in this championship. "I think so, at this stage yes. I think there's plenty of time before our last round for Daniel to come back. So right now it's race by race here but I should have enough time," said Lawson.
New Zealand is behind Lawson
In Formula E, New Zealand has several top drivers; in Formula 1, it was a long wait for a compatriot. With two Grands Prix now behind him, Lawson has noticed the enthusiasm for his achievements growing. "I think the support from home has been amazing. It's obviously very, very cool for New Zealand and a lot of people have followed this journey for a long time. So I appreciate all the messages and support from home. I'll try and do a good job this week and I think for New Zealand it's much better timing to watch the race as well, rather than at two in the morning like it normally is. All the drivers have been super supportive and helpful."
Lawson thus returns to Super Formula soon, his further future still unclear. AlphaTauri must ultimately decide who can take their cars next season. Besides Lawson, Daniel Ricciardo and Yuki Tsunoda are candidates, but only two seats are available. "I think it's just making the most of this situation now. I guess we see what happens, An opportunity to drive in Formula 1 is very rare and I have it now, so it's just making the most of it", Lawson concluded.
