Max Verstappen seems to have won over Mexican fans once again. There seems to have been quite a turnaround. From extra security to loud cheering when he wins. Only Verstappen gets this done.

After the US Grand Prix, there was a loud boo when Verstappen entered the podium. A clear 'Checo, Checo' could also be heard during the Dutch national anthem. The question then quickly arises as to how that should go when the F1 circus arrives in Mexico?

Extra security for Verstappen in Mexico

Arriving in Mexico, it does indeed appear that there is some uncertainty about security. The organisers are calling an action to have more respect for all drivers and Sergio Perez argues that his fans should also cheer for Verstappen. Still, Red Bull is not entirely confident.

Indeed, at the beginning of the week, it becomes clear that Verstappen will come to the track with extra bodyguards for his own safety. The Dutchman already does this during the Dutch Grand Prix, but now for the first time in Mexico. On the same day, it also comes out that thousands of fans are considering action to block Verstappen.

How different it is after the Mexico Grand Prix. Verstappen got through the weekend without any problems and was even received in the stadium with loud cheers. That cannot be separated from Verstappen's performance. He is supreme in Mexico. A great start, wonderful overtaking, a good restart and simply faultless.

Mexicans see Perez underperforming

However, it cannot be separated from Perez's performance either. All year, Mexican fans were led to believe that Checo is getting less material than his teammate. In Mexico, fans see what is really going on: Perez is simply an inferior driver. There is still some humming from the stands, but most are clapping for Verstappen. Recognition for Max, but also a clear signal to Perez.

Incidentally, a big compliment must be paid to the Mexican fans. Not only did they behave respectfully towards the drivers (unfortunately, they did boo Charles Leclerc). What stood out most was that everyone was still there. Verstappen noticed it too. The Dutchman knows better than anyone that grandstands can empty out when the local hero drops out. After all, that is how it happened when Verstappen crashed out at Spa in 2017 and 2019. The Mexicans remained seated, even though they obviously booed heavily.
