Max Verstappen did not win at the BBC Sports Personality Awards in 2023. The 2023 Formula 1 World Champion was nominated for the BBC's World Sports Star of the Year award. The Dutchman was outvoted by the public, who gave the award to Manchester City footballer Erling Haaland.

Although not specifically talking about the BBC Sports Personality, Verstappen has previously highlighted his dislike for these cross-sport end-of-year awards in his own country. Still, Verstappen was nominated for the award alongside Haaland (Football), Simone Biles (Gymnastics), Siya Kolisi (Rugby Union), Aitana Bonmati (Football) and Novak Djokovic (Tennis).

Verstappen won 19 out of the 22 Grands Prix during the F1 season. It was the most dominant season of all time as the Red Bull driver achieved the most consecutive wins, most wins in a season, highest percentage of points scored and many more. In most cases, he didn't just beat the record; he smashed it. It was arguably the greatest performance in an F1 season by any driver.

Still, it wasn't enough to sway the public who voted for Norwegian footballer Haaland. He helped Manchester City win the treble (Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League) for the first time. Man City also won the prize for Team of the Year and Coach of the Year [Pep Guardiola].
