On Tuesday night, the big news came out that Sergio Perez has signed a new contract. Contrary to earlier rumours, which suggested that it would be a one-year extension, the Red Bull driver has signed a two-year deal. Mexican medium Esto commented on the extension of Perez's contract.

Mexican media on Perez's contract extension

"The Mexican soap opera in Formula 1 has finally ended. Checo Perez has officially extended his contract with Red Bull and will remain Max Verstappen's teammate at least until the end of 2026," begins Esto.

The long wait has now come to an end. Last season, 'Checo' was set to depart Red Bull Racing after a disappointing year. Daniel Ricciardo was then said to be in with a chance to win the seat in 2024. Instead, Perez stayed.

This year once again, rumours emerged. This time, it was less about Ricciardo, who had started the season disappointingly, but more about Carlos Sainz. The Spaniard had started the season very well, and Lewis Hamilton's arrival means Sainz will leave Ferrari after 2024. Red Bull is once again putting its trust in Perez, however.

Mexican media sees angry Spanish fans

The Mexican outlet states that the news of the contract extension was not taken well by many. "Sergio Perez caused a shock on social media after his contract extension with Red Bull until 2026 was announced. However, many social media users, mainly from Spain, were angered by the news and let their displeasure be known among the posts referring to the Mexican."

Spanish fans would have preferred to see Sainz in the seat next to Max Verstappen. After all, the Ferrari driver has already won a race, whereas Perez is struggling to keep up with the Dutchman's pace in 2024. Despite this, Checo has secured a two-year extension, which will see him at Red Bull until at least 2026.
