Sainz and Ferrari lost Stuck in the midfield Canadian GP 2024

After winning the Monaco Grand Prix with Charles Leclerc, the weekend in Canada was not the one Ferrari had in mind. Two cars out in Q2, two DNFs, and leaving the weekend with 0 points, while Max Verstappen scored 25 for Red Bull. Carlos Sainz summed up his Grand Prix in Montreal.

"Never really enough pace today to make any overtakes. Only when we went on slicks there towards the end of the race, I started to feel there was maybe potential for some points and I was starting to become a bit quicker," Carlos Sainz told GPblog and other selected media.

"It was just trying to take some risks, to overtake people in the DRS trains, to try and be closer in sector two. Probably touched, maybe, the wet. I don't know. It's a very strange way that I lost it there in mid-corner and ended our race," the Spaniard went on to explain his spin and the moment he made contact with Alexander Albon.

Sainz believes this weekend is not acceptable if Ferrari would like to fight for the constructors' championship. "I think both McLaren and Ferrari could be a threat for Red Bull, but we clearly cannot afford to have more 'Canadas'. We need more 'Monacos'."

Something off with the Italian team

"There seems to be a tendency where we struggle a bit more in quali than in the race this year. Anyway, I think to be a second off like we were in Q2, there's clearly something off with our car, with our pace. It was just not our weekend. We never clicked. We never seemed competitive enough," Sainz summed up Ferrari's entire weekend.

He also added that Ferrari needed to recover as soon as possible to prove it was only an outlier for the Italians. "I think the last seven races, and then there’s one race. I think Canada was a bit of a one-off, a bit of a special one. And we need to understand what happened as a team. There was clearly something the others were doing in qualifying with the tyres to prep them better. And for us in the race, really we were just stuck in the midfield and we were not able to make any progress."
