Wolff reacts to Red Bull ruling Verstappen

Wolff in disbelief over Verstappen's statement: "Did he really say that?"

Max Verstappen was clear ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix: the Dutchman will stay at Red Bull Racing in 2025. Yet his answer was not clear enough to convince Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff.

Wolff responds to Verstappen's statement

Verstappen confirmed at the Red Bull Ring that he will also drive for Red Bull next year, something GPblog reported earlier in the year. So a possible switch to Mercedes is not possible until 2026 at the earliest, when the new engine regulations come into force in Formula 1. Nevertheless, Wolff continues to believe in an early switch for the three-time world champion.

Confronted with Verstappen's statements, Wolff initially reacted with surprise. "Did he really say that?", the 52-year-old Austrian responded to OE24. When told how, Wolff said: "I don't think he clearly said yes. But I was not there."

So Wolff continues to hope for Verstappen's arrival and is therefore keeping the door wide open. "As I keep saying, we will keep our empty seat open as long as possible. The most important thing is to make our car faster. If the car is fast, fast drivers will also want to drive for us," he explained.

The Mercedes team boss says he has great admiration for Verstappen, whom he calls "the best driver" at the moment. "I admire his achievements and as a person I got to know him as an exceptional young man. I have often said it lately: Max is the best driver at the moment and anyone who gets the chance would want Max in his car. Ola (Kallenius, CEO of Mercedes, ed.) sees it the same way," Wolff said.
