Verstappen knows what went wrong with Perez in Hungary: 'Obviously difficult'
- Estéban den Toom
Much has been said in Formula 1 in recent weeks and months about Sergio Perez 's position at Red Bull Racing. The Mexican has been widely criticised for his performance in the RB20. During qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix, Perez slid off the track and caused a red flag. Verstappen stood up for his teammate in front of the press, which included GPblog.

Asked if Verstappen agrees that it says more about the car than Perez, the Dutchman responded: "Of course it's also just difficult, but here it had to do with the weather. Especially McLaren, they are one and two, then you know that that car goes like a bullet. Then it's just difficult (for us, ed.), because the car is also just really tricky, and it's difficult to find the right balance."
Verstappen on Sunday's race
Verstappen himself will start Sunday afternoon's race from third place. It will colour orange for the Red Bull driver, as both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri will start ahead of him on the grid. With two drivers from the same team, it could already be a lot harder for Verstappen to overtake them, but the reigning world champion says this is not a factor.
"You know, if you are fast enough, it all doesn't matter. If you are faster you overtake them anyway, then they can defend and go all crazy, but it really doesn't matter. You can never put it down to that, that it's one car against two. If you're faster then it will work out, but I don't think that's the case at the moment either," concluded Verstappen.
