Wolff pinpoints the blame for Russell's car being disqualified

Wolff explains what caused lack of weight in Russell car

George Russell has been disqualified from the Belgian Grand Prix and, therefore, loses his win. Toto Wolff tells his Mercedes team to learn the lessons. Russell was disqualified for being underweight after the fuel sample was taken out of the car.

Russell opted to run a one-stop strategy, which wasn't initially planned. Russell asked the team to consider it over the team radio. It meant an extremely long stint on the hard tyres, and the young Brit had to fight against his teammate on fresher tyres in the closing stages.

How Wolff responds

At the time of speaking to GPblog and others in the Belgium paddock, the outcome of the investigation had not been released. But Wolff wants to make sure his team learn the lessons.

"I think it's the one-stop," Wolff pinpointed the blame. "There's no excuse. If it leads to a breach of regulations, then it is what it is. We have to learn from that. As a team, we have more positives today, obviously for George," Wolff continued.

"That's a massive blow to a driver who had childhood dreams to win these races. That is probably taken away, but it's going to get better," Wolff promised his younger driver.

It's not all doom and gloom for Mercedes. Lewis Hamilton has been promoted to P1, and therefore, the winner's trophy remains with the team. But the German team will still lose points in the World Championship.
