F1 Today | Newey deal done with Aston Martin, plus results from Monza test

3 September at 21:00

We may be heading into an off week in the world of Formula 1, but the rumour mill never stops spilling out some news. At the Italian Grand Prix, there was a growing sense that Adrian Newey's future was to be decided sooner rather than later. Those rumours have now intensified. Plus, catch up on an exclusive story from GPblog regarding F2 teammates Oliver Bearman and Andrea Kimi Antonelli.

Newey announcement to Aston Martin expected soon

There has been speculation for months regarding the future of Adrian Newey after he left Red Bull Racing after the Miami Grand Prix. With tensions that were bubbling up at the Austrian team before the 2024 season got underway, the Brit decided he wanted to leave after serving the team since 2006.

Since then, the Brit has taken some time away from the sport. There have been talks that Newey will retire from the world of F1, but that seems to have died down, and a return to the paddock seems likely. The rumours then linked Newey to Ferrari to join forces with Lewis Hamilton for the 2025 season.

However, rumours of an announcement that Newey was signing a contract to bring him to Aston Martin grew at the Italian Grand Prix. Although Fernando Alonso did not entertain those rumours, today, GPblog could confirm that the deal is complete and that it will be officially announced in the next few days.

Red Bull still faltering after Monza test

Monza may have played host to the Italian Grand Prix on the weekend, but today, it also played host to a Pirelli tyre test. Results came in today from the test, and once again, it was not a good look for Red Bull, who continue with their downward spiral.

Reserve driver Liam Lawson was behind the wheel of the Red Bull during the test, but the New Zealander could only clock a 1:22:126 while completing 104 laps. For George Russell in the Mercedes, he could complete 127 laps, as well as set a 1:20:747, just under one-and-a-half seconds better than the Red Bull, highlighting their lack of pace in 2024.

Bearman reacts to Antonelli's F1 announcement

There was an official announcement that was made in the paddock at Monza over the weekend, that Mercedes finally confirmed their replacement for Lewis Hamilton, and that was Andrea Kimi Antonelli. The 18-year-old Italian will partner up with George Russell and also join his F2 teammate Ollie Brarman on the grid next season.

Both drive for Prema in F2 for the 2024 season, but both of them have earned seats in the premier class of motorsport thanks to their performances in the lower formulas. The Brit spoke about Antonelli's announcement and said it was "very happy" for his current teammate.
