F1 Today | Daniel Ricciardo makes way for Liam Lawson at VCARB
26 September at 22:00

A highly-tipped driver change was announced on Thursday afternoon: Daniel Ricciardo will be replaced by Liam Lawson at Visa Cash App RB immediately. As a result, at COTA, the Faenza-based team will run with the driver line-up of Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda.

VCARB announce Lawson

It is now official: Liam Lawson became a full-time F1 driver with Visa Cash App RB, and will finish the rest of the season with the team, starting from the US Grand Prix after the autumn break. The news came after the team first confirmed the departure of Ricciardo. It is not the first time Lawson was substituted in for the eight-time Grand Prix winner, as he drove for the team (then called AlphaTauri) from the Dutch GP until the Qatar GP in 2023. Team principal Laurent Mekies also reacted to the announcement.

A farewell to Ricciardo

After returning to replace Nyck de Vries in 2023 as he was left without a seat following his departure from McLaren, Ricciardo's career in Formula One now seems to be over. He failed to convince Red Bull to pair him up once again with Max Verstappen, and therefore, Lawson could test his skills until the end of the season.

The driver born in Perth shared a farewell message following the announcement on his Instagram account, and why he did not say it out loud, his F1 chapter seems to be over. What made Ricciardo stand out on the grid? Find out here!

GPblog's exclusives

Talking exclusively to GPblog, Oscar Piastri opened up about his qualifying form in Formula One. In the current season, the Briton managed to consistently outqualify his teammate, as Norris currently leads that battle 14-4. The Australian addressed his form on Saturdays.

While Liam Lawson will now hope to consolidate his place the VCARB, Formula 2 drivers will also have to think about their future as they enter the final two weekends of their season. The Qatar GP and the Abu Dhabi GP are the ones remaining on the feeder series' calendar in 2024. Where could the youngsters end up in 2025? Find out here!
