Coulthard: 'One swallow doesn't make summer for Perez'

Red Bull Racing are not afraid of making changes within their teams, similarly to how it was announced last Thursday that Daniel Ricciardo will be replaced by Liam Lawson at Visa Cash App RB. According to the team's former driver, David Coulthard, the same fate could await Sergio Perez ahead of the 2025 season.

After replacing Nyck de Vries mid-2023, Daniel Ricciardo had the same experience after the Singapore Grand Prix. The Australian failed to make the step up to Red Bull to then replace a struggling Perez, and therefore, Liam Lawson was given a chance at Visa Cash App RB, where if the driver from New Zealand performs well, could build a strong case to complete what Ricciardo failed to do so as well.

According to David Coulthard, the Mexican's position is now under more threat, even as was closer to Max Verstappen in Monza, and then did well in Baku until he crashed with Carlos Sainz on the penultimate lap of the Grand Prix. "He did brilliantly in Baku, but one swallow doesn’t make a summer. One good result is not what you expect from your… He’s clearly the number two driver in that team. There was so much relief, I think, off the back of Baku," he told Channel 4.

"And then here it’s a bit back to reality. If he doesn’t keep getting some solid points in the remainder of the year, then, like Daniel Ricciardo looks like he’s in the way out the door, that could be the same situation for Perez," the former F1 driver underlined.
