ecclestone expects piastri title after era verstappen

Despite the difficult period Red Bull Racing and Max Verstappen are currently in, the Dutchman is (for now) in first place in the drivers' championship. Speaking to GPblog recently, Bernie Ecclestone expressed his certainty that the Dutchman will eventually be the best in 2024, too. But the former Formula 1 owner believes his reign will come to an end within two years.

Ecclestone appears to be a fan of Oscar Piastri. Although he is only in his second season in Formula 1, he has two Grand Prix wins under his belt. Ecclestone is impressed with how Piastri is developing. Speaking to German broadcaster RTL, the British billionaire even called Piastri "a magical guy."

'Piastri stands out above everyone'

"With certainty, he will become world champion in the next two seasons. If his car continues to perform well, it will succeed. He stands out above everyone," Ecclestone told reporters, realising that the drivers' title is no longer achievable this season. Piastri can, however, win the constructors' championship with McLaren. There lead over Red Bull is increasing every race.

"They have two hugely competent drivers and a very good car," Ecclestone praised the British stable and its drivers. Still, the Briton does not believe Norris can catch up with Verstappen. As he told GPblog earlier, Ecclestone again said he expects Verstappen to end up with top honours in 2024, as the lead over Norris is too big in his eyes.
