Horner wants constructive discussion: 'Now you have advantage on the outside'
After two weekends with controversial penalties in the 2024 championship battle, many drivers, personnel and pundits have different opinions on the rules given the set of guidelines, and argue differently. Christian Horner believes the penalties Verstappen received in Mexico City were 'harsh', and according to the team principal, he is concerned about how the competition will proceed now.
"I think it's something that really does need to get tidied up moving forward because there's great racing going on," Horner said. "I think it's just important that the rules of engagement are fair rather than giving an advantage to the outside line which was always in the history of motorsport. Being on the outside has always been the more risked place to be. But now, it's almost the advantage because all you've got to do is have your nose ahead at the point that it's irrelevant of whether you're going to make the corner or not."
"It’s frustrating. You don't want to have to consult a rule book on every single overtake
or defence. All of these guys have grown up doing a lot of racing and understand the principles of that. I think it's just important that we don't over-regulate into a point where you encourage a behaviour that is not within the guidelines and principles of motor racing."
Horner: 'Perhaps we overcomplicate F1'
Given the current guidelines, rules in the competition are not as simple to understand as they used to be. Moreover, different stewards can have different interpretations, that does not make it easier for the stewards to stay consistent.
"Max will always drive aggressively to what he perceives as the regulations. When you step over that mark, then of course you'll get a penalty. I just fear that we're perhaps overcomplicating and all I would do is encourage that there's a constructive discussion between the drivers and the driver steward to say, ‘Okay, we're going to have another four hotly contested races. What is and what isn't acceptable?'," Horner concluded in Mexico City.
