Fernando Alonso is hoping for a repeat of Aston Martin's strong result at last year's Las Vegas Grand Prix. Both Alonso and his teammate Lance Stroll finished in the points in the 2023 Formula 1 race. The two-time world champion points to a possible problem that could potentially play in his team's favour.

Dressed warmly in a thick jacket, Alonso arrives to speak to the media present on Wednesday evening. It is cold at the Las Vegas Strip Circuit, with minimum temperatures of around five degrees Celsius. Therefore, during the sessions over the weekend, the tyres will play an important role due to the cold asphalt.

In 2023, the F1 race in the American city proved successful for Aston Martin, with both drivers in the points. Alonso hopes to repeat that this year, but it remains to be seen until after the first free practice sessions how the Silverstone-based team will hold up.

Alonso: 'Tyre temperature could be an advantage for us'

"We'll see. I'm optimistic always on Thursdays, or Wednesdays," Alonso replied to a question from GPblog. "It's a different track. Tyre temperature is an issue because it's very very cold, long straights and maybe this year's car is one of the strengths that we have, you know, we heat the tyres quite quickly and we are okay on qualifying with the tyres, they need to be on temperature very very fast."

He continued: "So I don't know, I hope we can go back to our top of the midfield position. Not the top four teams, but if we can be the fifth or sixth team here, I think points are available in the race and that will be the target."

Asked if Aston Martin is capable of achieving a result like Alpine did with the double podium in Brazil, Alonso answered: "No, midfield. I don't think that we can fight for podiums this year in any race. It has to be a special scenario as it was in Brazil for some cars, but I think to win the points, that will be the target for the next races and maybe arguably one of the best opportunities will be here in Vegas, better than Qatar and Abu Dhabi."
