There have been some changes to the sporting and technical regulations for the 2025 Formula 1 season. The most important point is that the FIA wants to use AI in motorsport, so that it can be easier for stewards to make decisions during a session.

FIA wants to start using AI

The FIA World Motor Sport Council met on Wednesday 11 December for the last meeting of 2024. During this meeting several decisions were made. An important point is that the FIA wants to make more use of artificial intelligence (AI). The federation wants to use this to create better and clearer situations within the sport.

"The technical and safety department of the FIA is working on introducing new systems using artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the provision of information for decision-makers," the FIA wrote in the meeting report. The FIA wants to use AI for three reasons:

  1. Improve safety standards and implement preventative measures to reduce incidents.
  2. Improve efficiency by automating tasks, freeing up staff to perform more valuable and complex tasks.
  3. Improve fairness and consistency in decision-making by making recommendations based on past footage, or by automating violation detection, such as automatically detecting track limits violations.

Other changes to Formula 1

There is also a small change for the drivers. For example, under certain extreme conditions, the use of a cooling system for the driver may become mandatory. This device has been developed by the FIA in recent years in collaboration with the Formula 1 teams. The FIA will also use more gender-neutral language, in order to promote inclusivity.

In addition, adjustments have been made to the financial regulations of the premier class of motorsport. For example, sustainability initiatives are excluded from the cost cap, in order to promote environmentally friendly innovations in Formula 1. The technical regulations for 2026 have also been further refined, so that teams can work on aerodynamics for the first time from 1 January 2025.
