With the announcement that Cadillac and General Motors would be entering the world of Formula 1, it opened up two new seats on the grid for the 2026 season. There have been lots of rumours surrounding the team as to who they will sign in the premier class of motorsport, but there is a lot of interest from drivers in the United States, with the American team keen on bringing in a fellow countryman.

It had taken a while, but General Motors and Cadillac were able to join the F1 grid for the 2026 season, bringing another team to the grid. with teams in IndyCar and WEC already, there is no shortage of drivers signed to the American team, but will they be any of them brought over from their respective race series.

One driver who has already spoken about his interest in joining is Coltan Herta, already racing for Andretti Global in IndyCar. Of course, he was the ideal replacement for Pierre Gasly at then-Alpha Tauri, but he did not have enough points to obtain his super license, missing out on the chance. Now, he has enough points, and there is a real sense that he could be the newest F1 driver when the time comes. But there is another Andretti driver he has an interest in moving to the world of F1: Kyle Kirkwood.

Kirkwood: "Of course I'm interested"

The American driver joined Cadillac in IndyCar in 2023, winning two races and finishing ahead of Herta in that season. In 2024, he finished seventh, looking to improve as he goes into his third year on the team in 2025. But a move to F1 is something that would be on his radar if the opportunity came around, which he said in conversation with The Race.

"Of course, it would be of interest," Kirkwood said when posed with the question. "But at the same time, I love what I do here in IndyCar. It's what I always aspired to be - an IndyCar driver. It keeps me in the US, it keeps me at the place where I grew up.

"I was born and raised in Jupiter, Florida and I still live in Jupiter, Florida - and I love that about IndyCar, it keeps Americans at home at least. It's give and take in either direction. Of course, I'm interested, but I wouldn't be upset if I wasn't given the opportunity," concluded the American.
