The winter test in Bahrain did not go entirely as expected for Red Bull Racing, but Helmut Marko says there is no cause for concern. The team's top advisor says some fine-tuning is still needed, but, while he also sees that McLaren has some pace, he stresses that the Austrian F1 team are doing well.
Marko voices Red Bull expectation
"Things are going well. But McLaren are at the same level," Marko let Motosport-Magazin.com know. Still, he is not worried about the race simulation shown by Lando Norris, pointing to Red Bull's strong lap times on Wednesday. Everything is also running smoothly technically, according to the top adviser, including the latest updates Verstappen drove with on the final day. "There is still some fine-tuning to do, but in principle it's fine," Marko concluded.
Max Verstappen was clear after the winter test in Bahrain that it did not go badly, but there is definitely still work to be done for Red Bull, with the Dutchman therefore not expecting his team to be the fastest at the opening race, the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.
However, the four-time world champion did stress that it is difficult to compare Red Bull's pace with that of other teams based on the winter test, given the many unknown factors.
Technical director Pierre Waché admitted that Red Bull had different expectations from the winter test, with the Frenchman indicating that the progress made was less than hoped for, while also acknowledging that the test days were not flawless. He was therefore not entirely satisfied, but, at the same time, he stressed that it was important to find problems at this stage and not only with the season already underway.
