'We shouldn't take Horner and Verstappen getting booed too seriously'
Former Haas team principal Guenther Steiner was not surprised by the crowd's reaction to Red Bull Racing at the F1 75 event. In London, the Austrian team, Christian Horner and Max Verstappen did not receive the warmest of welcomes to say the least, but Steiner hardly believes it would be anything too big.
'Bit of a theme'
As the Red Bull team principal was talking on stage at the O2 Arena, the crowd began booing heavily the Briton. For a moment, Horner seemed upset, but he continued on. Defending world champion Max Verstappen was also booed, however, Steiner does not believe there is more to it.
"I think it has become a bit of a theme to boo Christian Horner and Red Bull. I think it was not meant to be nasty. It was just a little bit of fun as well. You've got the good people and the bad people everywhere. (...) Everybody jumps on the bandwagon. It seems to be trendy, but it's not nasty," he shared his thoughts to ESPN.
Steiner saw the FIA overreact
There was outrage in countries outside Britain over the approach of Horner, Verstappen and Red Bull. The FIA even came out with a statement, decrying the boos. Steiner thinks this is all a bit exaggerated.
Not many agreed with the fans reaction to Red Bull Racing in London, and the FIA also shared a statement on the matter. The federation called it a 'disappointing tribalist reaction'.
"I think they shouldn't take it as seriously as everybody's taking this one. I think we are overreacting, and the more you do that, the more it happens. And for me, that is what is happening."
"Also, the FIA coming out with that statement, you know, the booing is incorrect. But as you say, these are passionate fans and booing, booing is not anything really bad," he concluded.
