Windsor sees Lawson struggle: Would Perez have done better?
Liam Lawson once again had a disappointing weekend in the RB21 at the Chinese Grand Prix. He finished in P20 in both the sprint and regulat qualifying sessions, and was not close to scoring points. According to F1 analyst Peter Windsor, this not only shows how good Max Verstappen is, but also explains that the New Zealander has to change his approach.
Windsor: 'This shows how good Verstappen is'
"Again, this highlights how difficult that car is and how good a job Max Verstappen is doing in that car, that's the first point," Windsor began on his YouTube channel.
"I find it absolutely extraordinary that in his post-race comments he's talking about, 'I'm still confident, I just need to be quicker'. That's not the way, I mean the way is to think about why he's slow. And the reason he's slow in my opinion is because he's nothing but a late-braking oversteer wide turn-in driver," he continued.
"He should be saying, 'I need to start working on shorter corners and giving myself a bigger platform, a bigger palette on which to operate with all these variables that come into play, and I'm going to learn about that from Max Verstappen and doing lots of work behind the scene'," the analyst added.
Would Perez have done better?
After the 2024 season, Sergio Perez was let go by Red Bull Racing, and was replaced in the end by Lawson, who got promoted from Racing Bulls. According to Windsor, Perez would have been able to execute a better job in Shanghai last weekend. "Probably in this situation Perez would have got more out of the car because he would have been kinder to the rear tyres. I know it's the front tyre here that's an issue but he certainly would have done a good job of the rear tyres," he gave his verdict.
After the Chinese Grand Prix, rumours already started circulating about the possibility of Lawson being replaced by Red Bull ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix, which will take place in two weeks time.
