Horner describes Verstappen's driving as "phenomenal" since 2018 Canadian GP
Max Verstappen is only 21, but the young Dutchman is fast approaching is 100th Formula 1 Grand Prix in his fifth season. His boss Christien Horner believes he's already "overachieved" and has significantly matured over the last 12 months.
Last year in Monaco, Verstappen had a disaster. His crash in FP3 ruled him out of qualifying, and he had to watch his then-teammate, Daniel Ricciardo drive to victory. But two weeks later, he bounced back in the Canadian Grand Prix.
Since that race, Verstappen has become a more rounded driver, and Horner describes his driving style as 'phenomenal'.
"If we go back 12 months, Monaco was probably the worst weekend of his career. When I found him in Montreal a few days later, he had another attitude and, frankly, he has been driving phenomenally since. And he is even stronger this year," Horner is quoted by La Presse.
"We have overcome expectations since the start of the season. He is now more mature and he understood that he must be the one who drives the entire team to develop the car. And I think he appreciates that role, that he likes to be in the forefront and that he now has the experience to take it on board."
Following on from last year's Canadian GP, Verstappen recorded a 2nd place in France before winning the Austrian race.
