Nicholas Latifi amongst the candidates for Williams seat in 2020
While George Russell is almost certainly racing for Williams during the 2020 Formula 1 season, Robert Kubica's seat is still up for grabs. Claire Williams has confirmed Nicholas Latifi is a candidate for the seat, as well as Kubica himself. Latifi is the current reserve driver for Williams and has completed two free practice sessions.
The Canadian has won four Formula 2 races during the current season and sits second in the championship. Williams said the team are in no rush to decide their driver line-up for next season.
“We are looking at the 2020 seat and there is a handful of candidates. Robert has done a good job as well this year, it hasn’t been easy for him. The car isn’t what he would like it to be or what anyone would like it to be so it hasn’t been a good platform for him to indicate how strong he can be. It’s something that’s under consideration at the moment but I’m in no rush to make any decision," she said.
“That’s Nicholas all over really. He’s quite similar to George in that sense, despite being quite young he’s very mature and level-headed. We’ve been really impressed by Nicholas throughout the work he’s done for us whether that’s been in the FP1 sessions or back at the factory in the simulator or just conversing with engineers. He’s been a nice addition to have within Williams.”
Kubica has managed to score just one point this season, leaving his rookie teammate as the only driver on the grid not to score a point. Kubica's single came at the hectic German Grand Prix and required two Alfa Romeo penalties to help matters.
