2009 World Champion Jenson button has said that he “would love to drive an F1 car again” but rules that he is “past it now” for a return to the sport.
Button won his only World Championship with Brawn GP 10 years ago retired from the sport in 2016 with McLaren, making an appearance at the 2017 Monaco Grand Prix due to Fernando Alonso taking part in the Indianapolis 500.
The Briton has since driven in the Super GT, winning the title with Team Kunimitsu and taken part in the World Endurance Championship and Le Mans 24hr.
A return to the F1 grid would tempt Button but the 39-year old feels that he wouldn’t be considered.
He said in a Q and A with Sky Sports of a return: “I would like to say yes, but you get forgotten very quickly in the sport.
“I walk in the paddock now and people don’t recognise me. I’m only kidding about that.
“As a racing driver I think they have forgotten me though.”
2017 saw one of the biggest changes to F1 cars in recent years with the increase in size and more aggressive looking shape, increasing the speed drastically on track and improvements have come further in the past two years.
“Watching the cars on track, it’s awesome. The speed that these cars carry, the braking capabilities, the downforce, the change in direction. They are mega bits of kit,” Button added.
“They are quicker than anything I’ve ever raced.
“I do miss it in some ways and would love to drive an F1 car again.
“But racing in F1…no, I’m sure I’m past it now.”
