Wolff insists Mercedes will consult Hamilton before any decision on future drivers
Toto Wolff has admitted Mercedes won't dive straight into signing a new driver, without consulting Lewis Hamilton on his position and plans for the future.
Hamilton secured his sixth Formula 1 World Championship in 2019, moving within one of Michael Schumacher's record title haul. The Brit's sixth title was his fifth with the Mercedes AMG F1 team and his third in succession, making him one of, if not the greatest of all time.
Despite looking unbeatable with the Silver Arrows, Hamilton has often been linked with a move to Ferrari and nobody knows when he could retire. Toto Wolff admits they won't make a rash decision when it comes to signing a new driver and Hamilton will be consulted on the decision.
“I think that the values within the team are that loyalty and integrity are absolutely number one on the list,” Wolff told Motorsport.com.
“Understanding Lewis’ position and objectives will be key for any decision that we take.
“So we will not embark on a fishing mission with potential drivers out there before Lewis and us have had this discussion.
“And that hasn’t taken place because we wanted to wrap up the season, and then we’ll see how that goes.
“And because we’re having a consensual relationship, we need both sides to be happy.”
