Alonso wants to go back to Formula 1, but how realistic is that?
- GPblog.com
Fernando Alonso asked his followers what they want? The Spaniard hasn't been admired in Formula 1 for several seasons now, but should he return according to his fans?
The answer is a clear yes. Alonso held a poll on his twitter account with the following options: IndyCar, Endurance Championship, Dakar and Formula 1. With already 110,566 votes a clear winner can be identified: Formula 1, with no less than 82.3 percent of the votes.
What do the fans want?
90,996 people voted for a return to Alonso Formula 1 and who wouldn't want that either? The Spaniard always makes nice statements, because he certainly doesn't hold back and is one of the best drivers of recent years on the track. Still, the chance that Alonso will be able to return to the sport soon doesn't seem huge.
Reportedly, Alonso would have been aiming for a return to Ferrari. Vettel has ruined his chances as a frontman there and has to make do with an equal status to Charles Leclerc. If Vettel wants to look elsewhere, Alonso is of course eager to take the spot at his former employer.
Alonso back to Formula 1?
However, the question is how realistic is it? For Alonso Ferrari would also have to put down a large amount of money, there where they keep Leclerc in the negotiations with Vettel. Alonso generally does not fear competition and would not like to return to the sport and then be driven around the ears by Leclerc. A doubtful case for Ferrari.
Furthermore, the options for Fernando are limited. Red Bull Racing, with Honda as engine supplier, will never lure the services of the Spaniard, Mercedes will not put Alonso next to Lewis Hamilton and the other teams do not yet offer a chance for a world title. Perhaps it's starting to itch so much that Alonso would like to get back into a McLaren or Renault, but the chances for that team are that he will complain about the performance halfway through and not really stimulate positively for a team under construction.
