Mercedes pair doesn't understand: "Thought I had a better second lap"
- GPblog.com
In the final phase of Q3 for the Spanish Grand Prix, both Mercedes drivers sent a final push for pole. However, for both Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton there was no improvement. They themselves don't know why.
Hamilton says the first lap could have been better but he has no idea why it didn't work out in the second run. "The tyres just didn't feel the same and the amount of grip wasn't the same. Overall it was just a bad lap", says the world champion to Motorsport.com.
Second run slower more often
Bottas had a similar story: "I don't think the circumstances really changed, at least they didn't improve. I thought I had a better second round, but I did not. At the finish line I thought I was a tenth faster, but obviously it went back to zero".
Although a few people improved their time, the lack of fast laps in the second flying lap was a trend during this qualifying session. Also in Q2 few people from the top 10 improved their time during the last run.
