Tost: "Without a safety car, our strategy would have worked even better"

In an emotional weekend Pierre Gasly managed to put down a fantastic race. It was in the weekend of the Belgian Grand Prix of 2019 that he lost his friend Anthoine Hubert. AlphaTauri team boss Franz Tost is very pleased with Gasly's performance.
Different strategies
"After Qualifying, Daniil and Pierre finished in P11 and P12 - which is quite a good position because you can decide which tyres to begin the race - so we opted to split the strategy. Daniil started on the softs, while Pierre started on the hards", Tost starts in the AlphaTauri press release.
Gasly had a great start and was able to overtake a number of cars immediately, putting him in eighth place early in the race. "We decided to pit Daniil and leave Pierre out on the hard tyre, as for our strategy it was too early to pit him", Tost continued.
There was more in it for AlphaTauri
In lap 26 Gasly was finally brought in so he could start overtaking again from the back. "He then started a competitive comeback to close the gap and was able to overtake the Haas, Ferrari and the Racing Points to finish in eighth position. It was a fantastic drive from Pierre and without the safety car, our strategy to start on the Base would have paid off even more as I think", Tost concludes.
