It causes Red Bull's team management a lot of headaches; what engine should its two teams use from 2022. The main idea is to take over the Honda engine, but then Red Bull wants a freeze on engine development, something not all team bosses are happy about.

Ferrari priorities

In any case, Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto is not eager to freeze the development of the engines from 2022 onwards. He gives greater priority to discussing the engine regulations that will apply from 2026. "What's the new technical format for the new power unit in the future? Where costs will be addressed? And where technology needs to be addressed? I see that as a first priority,” he says on Motorsport.com.

On Monday 26 October, a video meeting of the Formula 1 Commission is scheduled to discuss future engine rules. "It's true that the engine [freeze] matter is one of the points of a big meeting, so I'm not sure we'll discuss it really at length," said Binotto.

Support from Mercedes

There is support for Red Bull's plan from the Mercedes camp. Team boss Toto Wolff has already expressed his support for the idea. "It's not often that Toto's in agreement with Red Bull," Horner says. "Obviously it's not an illogical thing for him, as they have the best engine currently in Formula 1. I think Toto would do anything not to have to supply us an engine."

Horner does think that Red Bull's plan is something that should be decided by the Formula 1 bosses. "I think there's a bigger picture for F1. And obviously, they need to take the necessary steps to protect and safeguard the sport in that respect with the power unit."
