Perez wins first F1 race: "It takes a lot of time to really sink in"
After 190 Grands Prix starts, Sergio Perez has finally won a race. The Mexican did benefit from the Mercedes mistake, but his Racing Point car had strong pace out in front. Perez crashed on the opening lap of the race and had to fight his way through the field in what was another impressive performance from the man who doesn't have a contract next season.
Has it sunk in yet?
"It takes a lot of time to really sink in. I dreamt for so many times this moment and then I wake up. I don't know if it's a dream or I am living through it. The worst time that I thought it was never going to come because I never had a car capable to do it and today it panned out and we did a tremendous race," Perez said in an interview on Sky Sports.
Even though Mercedes made the pitstop mistake, George Russell was fighting back in the final stages of the race. The Brit managed to get into second-place and we looked set for a last-lap battle. But Russell picked up a puncture.
"It was more George but as a team, we were pretty confident that we go to the end with tyre life and I think we had the life on the tyres to keep the victory. George has shown the talent for him and it's the problem that F1 has shown that you can only win with Mercedes."
