Jan Lammers and Christijan Albers have been reflecting on the past season in their column for Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf and discussed what their highlights were this season.

Low points Formula 1 season 2020

For Albers, Ferrari were the biggest letdown of the season. "Much has been said about their engine of course, but the car as a whole was underperforming as well. They started driving with a high rear end at Ferrari, as we know from Red Bull. But you saw that a four-time world champion like Sebastian Vettel didn't feel at all at home in the car, you miss the confidence as a driver.

"Another low point for me was Racing Point, with their copy of the 2019 Mercedes. I just don't think that's fair to other teams. In that context, I liked the fact that not Racing Point, but McLaren came third in the constructors stand," Albers said.

For Lammers, the low point of 2020 is of a different nature, namely the accident of Romain Grosjean. "In terms of the incident, it was a low point. At the same time, it also proved to be an immensely instructive situation with a view to developing even more safety in the future. Thank God everyone got off well."

Biggest surprise of the season

For Albers, Sergio Pérez provided the biggest surprise of 2020. "He has emerged as a driver. Before that, I always found him somewhat invisible and not such a controversial person. He keeps pushing and is very constant, doesn't do crazy things. Pérez has had a top year and deserves the spot next to Verstappen at Red Bull. Max is much more of a natural talent, but Pérez is going to be a tougher teammate than Alexander Albon."

As for Lammers, the surprise also came from Racing Point, but from Pérez's teammate. "I choose Lance Stroll's performance in Turkey. The fact that he took pole position there came as a surprise to me. Apart from the fact that he was too fast for Max Verstappen, because he also had eigtheen others behind him. He just did that really well. A day later he drove the first part of the race just fine, until the team brought him in unnecessarily," said Lammers.
