Mercedes expects clarity from Hamilton about his future soon
- GPblog.com
Mercedes waited a long time, but finally Lewis Hamilton was announced as one of their drivers for next season. The contract negotiations took a long time and therefore the news was only officially confirmed last month. Not ideal for both parties, as the focus has only recently turned to the upcoming season.
They want to avoid that problem next year as well, because of the one-year contract for the Brit, the German team and the seven-time World Champion will have to renegotiate a contract for 2022 next season. It seems Mercedes have learned from last year's negotiations and now want to know what to expect from Hamilton much quicker, explained the Italian arm of Motorsport.com.
Clarity before Monaco?
They write that Mercedes and Hamilton do not want a repeat of last year and want to get around the table before the Monaco Grand Prix at the end of May. For Mercedes it is important to know quickly what to expect from their current driver in the run-up to 2022, because with new rules the aim will be to put all focus on developing a new car, without hassle with contracts.
"We have agreed to restart contract negotiations at a relatively early point this year. We are doing this to avoid the situation of 2020. We can have enough discussion now about his future with racing and we are giving ourselves enough time for that," explained team boss Toto Wolff.
