McLaren’s number 1 driver has told
PlanetF1 that McLaren are still making progress despite seemingly going backwards since the Spanish Grand Prix. He remains adamant that the team will reach their end goal.
Both McLaren drivers failed to make it into the second qualifying session at the French Grand Prix. Having scored at every race prior to Monaco,
Fernando Alonso has not finished in the last three races.
“I think we go to Austria looking to deepen our understanding of the car. We’re making progress, and we will get there,” Alonso said.
“After a disappointing result, the best thing you can do is move on, so it’s good that we have another race this weekend. And the weekend after.”
It becomes harder and harder to understand how Alonso maintains this motivation in the cockpit of an F1 car, but the Spaniard continues to sound excited and upbeat ahead of a Grand Prix weekend.
“I like this track [Red Bull ring] – it’s a good mix of the new and the old,” Alonso added.
“The big hills, the gradient and the compact nature of the paddock all remind you that this was once one of F1’s grand old venues; but the modern facilities are also a fantastic addition.”
