Fernando Alonso has criticized the
Formula 1 once again for being too boring, as the Spaniard thought that Saturday's
Formula 2 race was the most exciting part of the day, rather than the F1's qualifying.
The two-time champion went into qualifying knowing that he was going to start Sunday's race with a grid penalty, leaving him little to fight for. He did beat his teammate Stoffel Vandoorne as usual, but that won't have any significance.
Q2 featured five cars that didn't come out of their respective garages, as both Red Bull and Renault opted to not set any times, as well as one of the Toro Rosso cars.
"It's more asking the fans what they think to have a nonsense Q1 and a not very important Q2," Alonso told Autosport when asked about the qualifying.
"At least I think they enjoyed the F2 race.
"It's definitely the most fun part of the day for the spectator."
It was very odd to see five of the 15 cars in Q2 not even setting a time, leaving Q3 to be rather predictable, with Mercedes locking out the front row and Ferrari the second, with Mercedes being almost two seconds faster than Kevin Magnussen in P5.
We definitely agree that Saturday's F2 race was the most exciting part of the day, but that's just because we enjoy watching a race more than a qualifying round in general!
