Mattia Binotto is not in favour of the technical changes the FIA wants to make for 2023 regarding the porpoising problem. The team boss does not rule out taking action against the FIA.
On Monday, the FIA announced that new rules to prevent porpoising will be implemented in 2023. The regulations are being changed due to safety concerns, on top of the measures that will already be in place from the Belgian Grand Prix.
Binotto believes that the changes to the regulations are unnecessary for safety reasons. After all, in the past few races we have hardly seen any porpoising. The Ferrari team boss therefore does not think that the bouncing is a danger anymore, he told the Italian side of Motorsport.com.
Binotto stresses that the change would be a major problem given the time of year. We are already almost into the second half of the 2022 season, so there would be little time left to modify the concept of the 2023 car. "If it does happen, we will try to figure out how to stop it," the Italian says.
The question is whether the FIA and the teams have reached a compromise. According to the new FIA rules, the floor will have to be raised by 25 millimetres, but earlier reports suggested that the majority of teams were in favour of a compromise proposal of ten millimetres.
Ferrari are fighting Red Bull Racing for the title this season, but Binotto believes the two teams should use common sense when it comes to the rule changes. "I have no idea if the regulations would be in our favour or in Red Bull's favour and I don't care." Binotto believes it is important to take responsibility for crucial decisions for the future of the sport.
So the solution is just to raise the car and sacrifice performance? Like...exactly what binotto and horner have been saying all along. So if that's the case why not just force the particular teams to raise their cars. We know why, we all know why. Putting your lawyers in high places in the fia is already paying off huh toto?
Formula 1 has become a victim of Mercedes playing since the hybrid era, so it is better for all teams to retire from the sport and change to Formula Mercedes Where the championship becomes without a manufacturers title, but rather 20 drivers competing in Mercedes cars, and the best decides the Formula World Championship.
Great. Should they call it Formula 2+, or Formula 2 2.0? While other teams migrate to a new series, owned by the teams rather that a shady American Company. They can nominate a commissioner who takes care of all of the the business of the sport, and the FIA can run that Mercedes idea as their top idea of racing.
Ferrari and Red Bull should leave the championship if the regulation passes. It's now obvious that the FIA is doing Mercedes' dirty work.
Veto to move and get Red Bull on board , boycott the race in Belgium! Mercedes…… sorry the FIA will be raging lol . It’s amazing to think all the Mercedes staff that now work for the FIA , of course this is nothing new it happen all the time other teams etc , but the meddling has never been so obvious.
If 6 teams threaten to leave the sport, FIA will fall in line automatically. Or drag them to the court and after that Veto could be used.
These are the things that make this sport a bit sour for me. By all means if porpoising is a legitimate safety concern to drivers, something has to be done. However instead of forcing a rule on all cars that only benefits mercedes powered cars, it should be forced on cars that are porpoising and once they resolve the porpoising, I see no reason why they can't go back to previous set ups to be more competitive. Don't understand how the FIA got to this conclusion. This is the type of thing that ruins the sport and will cause big teams to drop out of the sport. What's the point in racing if it's all just rigged. The FIA clearly don't understand what their role is and what exactly is fair racing. After last year's pathetic show of rule enforcement and consistency, this year has been riddled with over correctional enforcement.
Teams like Ferrari & RB can run their cars very low and have minimum porpoising or it doesnt affect them much, while Mercedes cant do so, and have to make their ride height higher. They have thus now lobbied the FIA to force everyone to ride their cars higher to take away the advantage that their competitors have.
Merc litteraly ran the car the lowest out of any team on the grid hence the porpoising.... They had too because there base car was just slower than Ferrari and RB.
Ferrari do suffer from porpoising and as badly as the mercs at tracks where it has been at it’s worst. Difference is they are still able to maintain speed. So Mercs may have lobbied for a rule change but then so have the drivers including those at Ferrari.
You do realise it has been confirmed that Mercedes run their car the lowest out of all the teams. Thats how their design philosophy works. They are slower because they had to depower their engines to stop the porpoising. When they tried to raise the ride height the car was even slower than just turning down the engine.
"The regulations are being changed due to safety concerns" So FIA is trying to force the rules without most teams agreeing. FIA - "The things I do for Merc" - new Netflix series
This entire porpoising fiasco is really a non issue. Are there even teams and drivers left that are complaining about it right now? And I can't help but think Mercedes thinking they shot themselves in the foot, it's the pitstop shenanigans all over again.
It's the copy writer of this article who uses the word 'forced'. It's click-bait! If none, or any of the teams disagreed, they could have stood up and argued the point. If you read Binotto's words, which forms the basis of this article, he does not express himself clearly at all, and the copy writer twist it to create anger
You do realise that "safety" issues are NOT voted upon by the teams right? So FIA simply says it's a safety issues and FORCES the teams that disagree. "they could have stood up and argued the point" We already know at least 6 teams disagree with the rules. Each of them have said it many times. Binotto is very clear: If FIA goes ahead and tries to force the rules to the teams, they will try to stop it (and veto it as he said before)
@ D. Katzroy, "This entire porpoising fiasco is really a non issue. Are there even teams and drivers left that are complaining about it right now? And I can't help but think Mercedes thinking they shot themselves in the foot, it's the pitstop shenanigans all over again." Agree completely, but tell Wolff that, and you'll get more broken headphones. ?
