In 2019, Ferrari was the biggest challenge for Mercedes. Thanks to its fast engine, the Italians were able to keep up with Mercedes and even beat it. In 2020, however, it was a completely different story. The illegal engine from 2019 was no longer allowed to be used and a new one was needed. It did not live up to expectations, so Ferrari fell far back.
Team boss Mattia Binotto, however, has put the focus in Maranello on the bike, so he expects them to be back at the top level in 2021. "I can confirm that the results on the test bench are good and that we are doing well around improving performance compared to 2020," Binotto explains to Speedweek.

Ferrari back on the podium next season?

"I think we can fight again with this new engine. We no longer have the worst engine on the field, if you look at the results and the data from the test bench. Of course I don't know what the other suppliers are doing at the moment and to what extent they are improving."
The engine was one of the weak points, but the Italian team was also aerodynamically behind.
"We are doing our best to eliminate the weaknesses of the 2020 car for the SF21. This is not just about the engine, because aerodynamics must and will also improve," Binotto expects.

So, has Ferrari engineers managed to find someway to squeeze more thermal efficiency, and thus power, out of the PU for next year? Hopefully its done clearly within the FIA specifications and not in the 'grey areas' again.

He's comparing with the likes of Williams, Alfa Romeo, Haas and AlphaTauri... He's not wrong!
