Hill advises Sainz: 'That's the best option for him in 2025''

It is barely April, but silly season in Formula 1 already seems to be drawing to a close. With Fernando Alonso committing his future to Aston Martin, there are few good seats open for the 2025 season. Carlos Sainz is the best free agent still looking for a new contract. Damon Hill and Pedro de la Rosa think Audi is a great option for him.
With the big teams almost sorted already, the focus shifts to the smaller teams. Pedro de la Rosa expects there to be few major shifts in terms of drivers next winter anyway. "I think personally that things won't change much in 2025," the former F1 driver stated in the podcast F1 Nation. "Apart from the fact that Lewis will go to Ferrari, as we all know. I think for 2026, things can change. Especially because there's a big regulation change on the car and on the engine side. So we will see."

Audi try to entice Sainz

One of the few top drivers still without a contract for 2025 is Carlos Sainz. The Spaniard saw the door shut at Aston Martin after Alonso's contract extension. Mercedes could be a possibility for the current Ferrari driver, but if Max Verstappen cannot be roped in, Andrea Kimi Antonelli seems to be the main candidate there. However, Audi - which is currently Sauber - are very keen to keep Sainz. A great option for the Spaniard, according to Damon Hill.

"A company like Audi are not going to come into F1 half-baked so they could be offering Carlos a huge amount to go to what is Sauber at the moment but will be Audi eventually," Hill argued. De La Rosa added: "There's so many question marks about what will happen with Mercedes, with Red Bull so I think that it is just up to Carlos to decide if he wants to join either Audi or wait and see if there's anything opening up. We are in the silly season in April basically. It's happening four months too early," laughed the Spaniard.

Referring to what Hill mentioned, we can be sure that a company like Audi will do their best to get into F1 fully prepared but that doesn't mean they are going to make it... This is a super complex discipline of motorsport with high stakes, strong and established competition. Teams have been trying to reach the top for decades... I don't see why Audi is sure to make it in just 3 years.

I agree with Mech, I’d also like to include another timing/issue/strategy for Sainz..

The only reason, I believe, that Sainz hasn’t signed with anyone is because he covets the RB in the 25 season. It would be his best opportunity to win a WDC. He’s waiting on Checo’s progress as well, as he is the only driver left to seriously take that 2nd RB spot.

Marko has made it public that waiting before they sign anyone is so that it forces Checo to drive to survive. (Pun intended) IMHO it’s a psychological game of forcing Checo/Sainz to compete for that 2nd spot. Which Marko believes is getting the most out of Checo.

I don't see RB switching from PER to SAI tbh.
Right now they don't have any reason to do so and even less if PER continues to perform like he has done so far this season.

"Marko has made it public that waiting before they sign anyone is so that it forces Checo to drive to survive"

Never seen Marko say something like this. Any source?

I'd suspect merc woukd just offer Carlos a 1yr deal. Audi Kick Sauber might want Carlos on a longer term

Carlos should wait to see if Checko falls off in performance.

(Edit for spelling)

I agree, Audi would be the best long-term solution.
MB has ANT in the starting block, it's a matter of time until the later will join MB.

On that line of thought try this on the Saint when the opportunity arises...

I'd agree with you and then we'd both be wrong. That make you happy?

If you ever happen to be in a disagreement with someone you can say...

"Well, I could agree with you but then we'd both be wrong.

Happy now?"

Lets see the options. RB, Mercedes or Audi, now that the door at AM is shut with Alonso sticking around.
Sainz wants to lock in a deal to secure his seat ASAP. However, RB wants to wait till later in the season to see if Checo will maintain his current form or fall off a cliff like he did last year after the Miami GP. RB is in no hurry to make a decision.
Mercedes, is also in no rush to make a decision as they are waiting to see how Antonelli does in F2 and also how he does in the W13 testing next week. If you look at the 4 championships that Kimi has won in the past 2 years, he often doesnt start winning from the first or early races, but is consistant and continues improving and once he figures out the car, he then goes on to dominate the rest of the season.
Audi seems to be Sainz's best option, so Damon is right.

Actually, I'm not so sure about the sauber/audi seat for Sainz. We know that Sauber will be the same crap in 2025, so that's 1 wasted year right there for Carlos.

Sauber and Audi seem to be in a very unhealthy relationship until 2026. Sauber doesn't want to spend a single cent more than necessary, knowing that they are on the way out. Audi isn't putting any money into the team now, as it isn't their team yet.

So even after Audi takes over in 2026, it will take a few years for the infrastructure spending to catch up. Audi will not be competitive (let's say top 4 or 5) right away. It will take a few years to get there. That's an awful lot of time to spend in F1 purgatory. If I'm Sainz I would prefer a seat at Mercedes or RB (if there is one available).
