Formula 1 is on the brink of one of its most important seasons yet. In 2022, the cars will look completely different and according to Simone Resta, technical director of Haas F1, every team will keep their eyes wide open to make sure they haven't missed any 'tricks'.
Haas F1 was the first team to come up with a presentation of the car on February 4. It must be said that the car Haas showed on Friday is a very early version of the real VF-22. The team was more concerned with the 2022 livery, so it could be that the American team will drive a completely different car in Barcelona and Bahrain.
It is likely that several teams will hold a similar launch. This way, the teams don't have to give much away before the test weeks begin. During those test weeks, Resta will at least be looking closely into the lap times to see if other teams have any specifics on the car. "I think everyone will be looking with wide open eyes to see if we have missed a trick somewhere," he says in conversation with The Race.
The new rules are strict, so teams have little chance of finding loopholes and it should make the field closer together. Despite that, Resta thinks the different teams will still come up with different interpretations of the new rules.
Haas is so far the only team that has made a 2022 presentation. The next team to do so is Red Bull Racing on Wednesday. Aston Martin and McLaren will follow on Thursday and Friday.
