Oscar Piastri has addressed a theory that points to McLaren as being the worst off when in the wake of the car ahead, which he, obviously, doesn't 'plan on testing much'. During the media day in Jeddah, Piastri was asked about his step forward in qualifying after the arduous work he put into it during the past winter.
"Qualifying is incredibly important. I think regardless of the kind of intra-team dynamics, with pit stop preferences and whatever that causes, just the power of clean air is so important. So I think regardless of that, you always want to be qualifying at the front," said the Australian to media present in Saudi Arabia, incuding GPblog.
McLaren the weakest F1 car in dirty air? Piastri not eager to put that theory to the test
Running in dirty air could be the reason
why Lando Norris failed to make the necessary headway to get ahead of Max Verstappen in Japan, or of George Russell in Bahrain? Is McLaren's MCL39 more sensitive to the dirty air from the cars ahead?
"Not necessarily. I think everybody struggles with it. But I think it's pretty similar for most of the teams. I think we saw in China, I think the Ferrari was very quick through the whole weekend and they also struggled to get through the dirty air. So I think it's just a grid-wide problem. I don't think it's specific to us."
Befor concluding: "I don't really plan on testing that theory too many times hopefully."
