During the race weekend in Japan, the decisions made by the FIA in Singapore are still sensitive. The race organisers decided not to give Max Verstappen a penalty after holding up Yuki Tsunoda in qualifying. To Motorsport.com, several drivers expressed their disappointment over the calls made by FIA.
Carlos Sainz spoke in Suzuka about qualifying in Singapore. He regretted the race management decisions that weekend and expressed hope that the FIA had learned a lesson with this. Sainz says: "It's just unfortunate that the person who dominates and wins pretty much every race is the only one who gets away with it, while everyone else has had penalties this year. So it's a bit strange and hopefully they will learn from it."
Mercedes driver George Russell also said he did not fully understand the decisions in Singapore. "It was definitely a bit strange to see Max get away with those reprimands last week," he began. "We understand it's not easy, but last week was clearly a slam dunk." Russell says he misses the consistency of the FIA.
Finally, Lewis Hamilton also responded. He too understands little of the reprimands imposed on Verstappen and would like to see modern technology given a chance in Formula 1. Hamilton commented:"That rule has been the same for ages, you know? I think we need to look at AI for things like this so we get good decisions. I'd like to see if AI can do it better or not."
