Flavio Briatore disagrees with those who claim
Max Verstappen is too aggressive on track. The Italian businessman believes Verstappen was exactly what
Formula 1 needed and places him in the same league as sporting icons
Michael Schumacher and
Ayrton Senna.
Four-time world champion
Max Verstappen has amassed a huge fan base in recent years, but not all
Formula 1 fans appreciate his driving style. He is often criticized for being "too aggressive" on track, but
Flavio Briatore strongly disagrees with that assessment.
"He reminds me of Michael [Schumacher], Fernando [Alonso] and Ayrton Senna," Briatore told Sport.de. Stressing that the Dutchman is exactly what Formula 1 needed. "Everyone criticises this boy for his spectacular driving style. That's really stupid! He brought new energy to the sport. Formula 1 desperately needed this new star."
Is Verstappen the Schumacher of his generation?
When asked whether he sees similarities between Max Verstappen and seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, Flavio Briatore responded firmly: "Absolutely. At one point, Michael was about to get into a fight with Senna. During a test in Germany, Senna grabbed him by the collar. He told him he was the world champion and that Michael should have more respect. Michael didn't care. He wanted to be respected himself, and that's why he drove so aggressively. That's the only way to become world champion."
