Verstappen fastest in FP1 at Monza
As in Hungary, an alternative qualifying format is being tested this weekend. As a result, drivers have only 11 sets of tyres at their disposal instead of 13. This caused less action during the first free practice at Monza (which was also the case at the Hungaroring), as the drivers simply have fewer tyres to use.
The battle at the front of the field seems to be between
Red Bull Racing and
Ferrari. All drivers from the two teams drove on hard tyres throughout practice and in the end it was Verstappen who was narrowly faster than Sainz. Perez made it two Red Bulls in the top three with the third time and
Charles Leclerc was fourth ahead of
George Russell. Fernando Alonso finished sixth and the
McLaren drivers were seventh and 11th. Check out the full results of the first practice session in Monza below!
