For the first time in the 2021 F1 season, the two contenders for the World Championship will start a race separated from each other. Max Verstappen starts from P2, but could benefit from a Charles Leclerc grid penalty should the Ferrari driver need to change his gearbox following the crash. Hamilton starts from seventh.

Ferrari on pole

For the first time since October 2019, Ferrari qualified on pole. Penalty aside, Charles Leclerc is set to start his eighth race from P1 and is first in his home country by birth. The man from Monaco is yet to finish a race at this venue.
Verstappen also starts from the front-row, with Valtteri Bottas launching from P3. Carlos Sainz starts from fourth. In the weekend following his contract extension, Lando Norris once again demonstrates why he could be a star of the future. He starts from fifth with Gasly in sixth. Those drivers aforementioned could all end up moving up one grid spot should Leclerc get a penalty.

Some surprises

On his Monaco debut, Yuki Tsunoda failed to escape from Q1 but Gasly starts from sixth. Sebastian Vettel made it into Q3 and beat Segio Perez who experienced another disappointing qualifying session for Red Bull Racing.
