A strong start to the
Formula 1 season was followed by some disappointing results for Haas. In Canada, the American team seemed to be back, but
Mick Schumacher and
Kevin Magnussen could not convert their strong starting positions into points.
For Schumacher in particular, the
Canadian Grand Prix was a heavy blow. He qualified in sixth place just behind his teammate, but saw a possible points finish slip through his fingers when his Haas car broke down. Meanwhile, Magnussen collided with
Lewis Hamilton after just a few corners, damaging his front wing.
Magnussen and Hamilton fight it out
According to
Jolyon Palmer, Magnussen was a bit too eager at that point, just like in Barcelona where he also got into trouble with Hamilton on the first lap. The former Formula One driver is not surprised, because the fact that Haas can fight with
Mercedes is something nobody could have predicted.
"It's the most unlikely rivalry you can imagine: Lewis Hamilton having first lap incidents with a Haas. That proves that Haas has managed to get the car up there and for Magnussen to qualify in strong positions, which allows him to fight with Lewis," he said in an analysis for
Formula1.com.
Initially Magnussen was able to continue despite the damage to his front wing, but the
FIA forced him to come in for a new front wing early in the race. After this, the Danish driver was unable to fight his way back to the front.
